LO1: Treatment [✓]

FAST FASHION

WORKING TITLE:
A working title is a temporary title that is used throughout the production of a project. The working title for my project is “fast fashion" this is due to my documentary being about fashion and the way that we can change the impact that the fast fashion has human, social and environmental factors. This is also due to it being what my documentary is about.

SUBJECT:
The subject of my documentary will be fast fashion. This is an area which I am really interested in and after research decided that it was something that people do not have much knowledge about. I believe that the only way that a change can be made is by informing people of the impact that they are having. Within the documentary I would like to have an interview with someone who can offer alternatives to shopping at high street stores and buying throw away fashion.

GENRE:
I have chosen to work in the documentary genre for my short film. This is because I want to educate people about the fast fashion industry and also to inform them about the impacts which fast fashion has on the world. The only way that people can try to make a change is by knowing that they have to. Through the genre of documentary I want to inform people about the negative effects of the fast fashion industry with statistics to back up my argument.

PEOPLE:
People will be included within my short film, however these will not be actors. I want the focus to be more on the voice over and what the audience is being told rather than focusing on a person. In order to engage the audience with my short film. There will be a short interview from someone who works at a thrift store to engage the audience.

SYNOPSIS:
Within my documentary, I aim to show the human, social and environmental impacts which the fast fashion industry had. I want to offer other alternatives such as thrifting as a way of minimising the amount of waste that each person creates from buying throw away clothing.

REQUIRED CREW:
A large crew is not needed in order to create my short documentary, I will be able to do all of the camera work myself. I will be using the 4K camera in order to record interviews which I will place on a tripod and then for other shots I will be using the drone. I want to capture both a busy city   As I am very aware of the type of shots I want and the editing style, this means that when it comes to filming, I am able to know exactly what I need to shoot.

LOCATIONS:
To create an engaging short film I will be filming in a variety of locations which reflect the content. An example of these are:
  • Thrift store
  • Fashion store
  • High street

LO1: Short Film Analysis

Room 8 - a Psychological mystery by James Williams

Narrative
Room 8 is a room where prisoners are sent to be killed. The short film contains two main characters, a new prisoner and a person who we assume to be a prisoner who has been there for a lot longer. The main focus of the film is on a red box which sits on the bed in the cell, this is something that the older prisoner seems to be slightly protective of, knowing what is inside the box. The new prisoner ignores his warning and decides to open this box anyways, what he sees is a replica of the cell that they are in, room 8. We find that this is not just a replica of the room but it is actually live as the new prisoner
can see himself in the box and reaches out to touch him. He climbs up to the ceiling and gets the male to open the box whilst he jumps out and escapes. We then see that the prisoner is tiny, like the size of an ant and we see a human size man who was in room 8. As the prisoner runs away to escape the man from the room gets squished with a matchstick box. he then picks up the box with him in, locks the red box and tosses him into a draw where you see lots of other matchstick boxes which are moving. We presume there are other people who have had the same fate trapped in these boxes. The man then shouts 'send in the next prisoner'. This is where the short film ends.

Characterisation
Throughout the short film, we only see three characters, with two of these being the main characters. We do not learn the names of any of the characters throughout the film, this could have been done to show the order and the way that everyone in prison is treated the same and not as individuals. The first character we are introduced to is the prisoner when we first see him he is in handcuffs with his hands behind his back being forcibly taken into the prison. We see how he is struggling away from the person who is guiding him to the room. This prisoner is a younger man, portrayed to be around the age of 30. He has a full, black beard and has a bloody and bruised area around his left eye. This makes the audience think about what might have happened to him and how violence may be a reason as to why he has been taken into prison. We then see the guard for a brief moment, he unhandcuffs the prisoner and clothes the door on him before walking away. This is the last we see of this character. The final character we are introduced to is, what looks to be another prisoner who has been in the cell for a long time. He is older and wears glasses but seems to have some sense of authority compared to the newer prisoner, maybe due to him being in prison longer. This prisoner seems wiser and does not seem to care about the younger prisoners wellbeing. He does not answer the questions that the younger prisoner asks but also seems to have a sense of knowing the answer to them and answering silently. However, we find that this older prisoner may not be the person who we think he is. Throughout the short film, we view him as a prisoner himself however after the younger one has escaped and we see him as human-sized and then trap the younger prisoner inside a matchbox our opinion of the character changes. We hear him say 'send in the next prisoner'. This last line makes us question the character that we feel as if we had started to know and understand during the short film. Is this character actually in disguise as a prisoner but actually in a higher position like a general who has been put there to capture the prisoners. As the short film is a psychological mystery, the audience does not need to fully understand what the film is about as part of the pleasure that the audience will receive from watching it is trying to piece together what has actually happened. The idea of the older prisoner being much larger and capturing the ant-sized prisoners and trapping them within matchstick boxes could be a metaphor for the prison system. The size of the prisoner shows their position and authority within the prison system, with the prisoners being small with little to no power, and the main person of authority being large and the size of a human. The way in which the prisoners are captured and placed into matchboxes could represent how people are arrested and placed into cells, left to be forgotten about. With the matchboxes being a connotation of a prison cell.

Camerawork and Editing, Visual and Sound Effect

At the beginning of the short film we hear ambient outside sound, this is put into place to help set the scene as we hear the sound of footsteps along a gravel path as the prisoner walks outside of the prison. We also hear chatter in a different language of what seems to be the guard setting down the rules of the prison to the prisoner. We hear the door slam shut and then there is some narrative between the two characters in the cell, with the prisoner asking questions and not getting answers.

Sight - Sci-fi film by Sight Systems

Narrative
The short film follows a man, Patrick, who is one of the engineers for a company called sight, this is a company who have developed technology so that there are apps and games everywhere you look. We see the technology of Sight throughout the film, with Patrick playing different mini games such as "chef master" and "wingman". The app "wingman" has an important role throughout the film with is being a game which lets you score points on a date. This is something that Patrick uses throughout  his date with Daphne, it tells him things which will raise his score. This helps him to  During the date it becomes apparent that he works for the company "Sight", she brings up some points about the system which he tries to hide. After the successful date, Patrick takes her back to his house. When they're back it becomes apparent that he's just using her to up his level on the app. As she tries to leave, he changes her programming, basically controlling her mind.

Characterisation

Within the short film, the focus is just on two characters, Daphne and Patrick. We find out that Patrick is an engineer for a company which is called "Sight", this is a system which is imbedded into each persons eyes which lets them see things which aren't actually there, these are holographs of things which you may see on smart phones. Patrick is characterised to be a person who has a malicious side to him, the way that he makes use of "Sight system" to his advantage is a key part of this making him seem like a controlling person. We can see this through the way that he restarts levels of the games he's playing to in the end controlling the mind of his date. On the date we are introduced to Daphne, she herself is also fitted with the "sight system". We can see throughout the date that she is trying her nicest to be nice to Simon even though she is irritated by many of the things she says.  Daphne seems intrigued by the way that he works for the company and you can see that through the system Patrick knows what are the right things to say and do in order to higher his score and make Daphne impressed by him.  This seems to be working until she spots that the date was just a game to higher his score. We see her become angry with him, showing how she a lot more "normal" that Patrick. Power struggles are also shown throughout the short film, with Patrick having a lot of dominance over Daphne, especially because of his role within the "Sight" company where as Daphne's vulnerability can be seen through the way that

Camerawork, Editing, Visual and Sound Effects
Throughout the short film there are lots of shots which are there in order to enhance the idea that each individual "sight" system can only be seen by the person. A perfect example of this is at the beginning of the short film. We first see Patrick lying on the floor moving in a peculiar way,  this then switches to the system where we can see that in fact Patrick is playing a sky diving game where he has to enter hoops in order to score points. There is then a shot of him again without the visual effects. This mix of shots and visual effects are prominent throughout the whole film to really portray the idea that this is a sight system within a real world. Without this mix, the audience wouldn't understand the narrative but the contrast strengthens this. The visual effects throughout the short film are very strong, there are graphics on the screen which show what each person sees though the "Sight" system and  The way that the film is shot is through the character, Patrick's, eyes. This shot type is called a point of view shot which is where the audience sees what the main character is seeing, experiencing different events through their eyes.
